This is sad news indeed! He was really a transformational Prime Minister of Australia. Here’s a rather balanced obit: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/21/gough-whitlam-dies-at-age-98

One episode in his life comes to mind: it seems he had for his Classical Greek course Enoch Powell as the faculty. Powell was later in life a Tory MP in England ‘well-known’ for his ultra-racist ‘rivers of blood’ speech. Whitlam found Powell’s teaching so ‘dry as dust’ that he quit the course. He also dubbed Powell ‘a textual pervert’ :) Whitlam was not without a certain verbal flourish.

      Hi Himanshu
I follow your Sanskrit blogs avidly and admiringly and now It isembarassing to see people cheering quacks and fascists like Subramaniam Swamy. Supporting Sanskrit should not be synonymous with support for the agenda of fascists who wish to present their own fantasies as history. Sanskritists think all Indian languages and culture issue from a single Sanskrit culture. That is against facts and is primarily founded on a hegemonistic attitude, no doubt arising from a historically casteist attitude of superiority. Your arguments for making Sanskrit the single link language is not only unrealistic and impractical but even conceptually it is hegemonistic and does not take into account that there are many cultures and language families not rooted in Sanskrit. Dravidian languages have a separate origin and languages like Tamil have a well-recorded literature going back more than two thousand years evidencing and independent tradition and language. Ignoring these and trying to thrust Sanskrit on such cultures is unhealhy and uncivilized.

You are hundred percent right that Sanskrit should not be thrust on anyone.

The promotion of Sanskrit will strengthen most Indian languages directly and perhaps Tamil and other languages indirectly. It is a win-win situation.

Experts in Tamil and other languages should work towards developing those languages without letting the promotion of Sanskrit disturb them. We are well wishers of every language in the world and especially all Indian languages which includes Tamil.

Let us be positive and help each other to grow to our fullest capability.

        Thanks for your comments.
