विपणिः (Market)

ह्यः अहम् इदं प्रश्नं भट्टवर्यम् अपृच्छम्। अपि विपणिः इति शब्दः अस्ति? मोनीयर-विलियम-शब्दकोषे मया विपणः आपणः इति शब्दौ दृष्टौ किन्तु विपणिः इति न दृष्टः। पूर्वं विपणिः इति शब्दः श्रुतः इति स्मरामि। कदाचित् इयम् आकाशवाणी इति समाचारे श्रुतः।
अधः भट्टवर्यस्य उत्तरम् अस्ति।

आपणस्तु निषद्यायां विपणिः पण्यवीथिका॥

Designations for the market are:

आपण m. Market, commodity, commodity
निषद्या f: Market Hall
विपणि f: sale, shop, market,
पण्यवीथिका f: Goods Road, Bazaar, Market Street

The above are correct interpretations of the words for market.
All the four are for market in common synonyms. But to some commentators the first आपण and निषद्या are synonyms of market place in common while the second two denote Market Street.
हट्टः इत्यपि तत्रैव सामान्यशब्दः  used to denote generally the toll gate. विपणि could be used in masculine also according to सर्वधर. “पर्यापतत्क्रयिकलोकम् अगण्यपण्यपूर्णं विपणिनो विपणिं विमेजुः” इति माघप्रयोगः. पण व्यवहारे is the root all the words आपणः, विपणिः and पण्यः – commodity for sale.
The second word is used in the sense of the street where the commodities are spread for sale or the Market Street, while the first is used for the shops or Sales Hall. These two expressions come in the description of the plan of a city पुर in the enumeration of the related words applicable to township or capital city. The next three words are also used in the same sense according to some commentators. रथ्या, प्रतोली, विशिखा which are common terms for streets. According to Hemachandra and Medini, this word विपणि is used for the Market Street, Shop and the goods for sales: “विपणिः पण्यवीथ्यां च भवेदापणपण्ययोः” . The usage  “विशिखायां  सौवर्णिप्रचारः” in Arthashastra, meaning the Market Street the gold is to be spread makes it synonym with विपणि.
