Chhandas usually called as meters in English are too many. There are tow broad categories – akShar-vritta or maatraa-vritta. AkShar is syllable and maatraa is a syllabic instant.
In Sanskrit poetry, one has verses or stanzas or ‘pada’s. Each pada has four quarters, e.g. even in Bhagavadgeetaa although most Shlokas are written in two lines, there are two parts. See the very first Shloka in Geetaa.
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः |
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ||१-१||
The four quarters are -
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे
समवेता युयुत्सवः |
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव
किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ||१-१||
So each Shloka has four quarters. For most vrittas the number of syllables or syllabic instants are same. But rules of different vrittas also provide for the number to be different. So, they can be sama-vritta’s or ardha-sama-vritta’s or vishama-vritta’s.
The first Shloka in Geetaa is a sama-vritta, because each quarter has identical number of eight syllables.
In an Appendix in Apte’s dictionary, you will find examples of many different vritta’s grouped by number of syllables in each quarter, ranging from 4 syllables in a quarter to as many as 23 syllables in a quarter!
Each syllable can be long or short, so, of weightage 1 or 2. In an earlier post I had detailed the Mandaakraantaa vritta used by Kalidasa in all 115 pada’s of his Meghadootam.

patitum is a word with tumun prtyaya for example, vaktum (to say) kartum (to do) etc. a prtyaya is a word which is added to a dhatu (root) to give some meaning. the meaning of tumun is to do something patitum meaning is to read.
बालक: पठितुं विद्यालयं गच्छति
that is the boy is going to school to read
but patanaartham is for doing something
बालक: पतनार्थं विद्यालयं गच्छति
that is the boy is going to school for reading
